It was a passion for performance that led Rachel to establish a marketing company in 1996. Frustrated at seeing otherwise talented business owners frittering marketing budgets away with a low return, Rachel committed to help South Island businesses achieve better results and guide them to higher performing marketing strategies that would yield a better bang for buck.

Our first office above, was on Montreal St in Cowlishaw Mews next to Le Bon Bolli. Then we took a whole floor in Leslie Hills Drive off Mandeville St where we stayed for 8 years.
From marketing agency to advertising agency
To facilitate the implementation of these strategies, Rachel surrounded herself with a dynamic team of talented creatives, and transformed the consultancy into an advertising agency with poise. The agency quickly gained a reputation for well-researched strategy, and gutsy "delicious" creative "with legs".

This marketing-led approach landed Alexanders iconic South Island brands including SKOPE Industries, Tait Electronics and Christchurch International Airport. And it was Rachel's business acumen that landed her with the esteemed title of South Island Self Employed Woman of the Year, 2000.

The two Sarahs and Rachel were a formidable marketing trio among our larger team of creative minds.

Clearly a winning formula, Alexanders grew by over 100% for three years in a row, and regularly swept off laden with multiple awards for creative in print and direct marketing services from the South Island Advertising Awards.

Celebrating winning the supreme award at the Sth Island Advertising Awards long ago. Since then, after filling up a whole wall with gold, silver and bronze awards, we haven't entered awards again, preferring to celebrate success by achieving good results for clients rather than in award golds!
Yet it is for its achievement with one of its earliest clients that Alexanders remains most proud. Over 18 months, the agency's strategies and creative doubled revenue whilst halving ad spend for local branches of Bay Audiology, through concerted test and measure campaigns. Bay Audiology Group is now Australasia's leading audiology practice with clinics in 34 locations nationwide.
More than 14 years on, the passion for improving ROI for clients still burns. However with the vast increase in demand for online marketing, Rachel decided to reposition and changed the name from Alexanders Advertising to Alexanders Internet Marketing in early 2010.

Below, celebrating our 10th birthday in 2007

We wired up the back part of Rachel's house at the beginning of the recession in 2009 for seven staff, and still occupy the bottom third of the house with an extra office upstairs. The recession necessitated a change of business model and several staff began to work as contractors from home rather than full time employees. The space now houses a core team of five with around four or five regular contractors doing up to 20 hours a week, making the space more comfortable. The new business model has enabled the change in business focus from advertising to online. The house, although 1930's construction, has fared well in the earthquakes losing all three chimneys but not collapsing on us and not requiring any move in premises We've still got all the furniture from our larger premises in case the current upsurge continues and we need to do the swanky office thing again!
